BC Beats NIU: By the Numbers
By Ben Neuwirth
BC won their first game against NIU on Friday, defeating their hosts 23-20 after Huskies kicker Christian Hagan was unable to knock through a tying field goal. Here are some interesting statistics from BC’s opening game:
- 26 and 42: The number of completions and pass attempts for Redshirt Freshman QB Anthony Brown, the most in either category during the Steve Addazio era
- 92: Total number of offensive plays BC ran, 10 more than their 2016 high
- 2.3 vs. 4.0: Jon Hillman’s yards per carry compared to Freshman A.J. Dillon’s, the big frosh didn’t get much playing time but was effective
- 0: Sacks from the BC defense
- 2 vs. 12: Tackles for loss for BC and NIU’s defense respectively, BC won the game but lost the battle in the trenches
- 76: The amount of yards RS Frosh WR Kobay White had in his first game, on 6 catches, his size and fluidness suggests a star in the making
- 2 vs. 1: The number of TDs versus interceptions for the young BC QB, a good start for a guy who didn’t know he’d be starting until gameday
- 15/38: Huskie QB Ryan Graham’s completions and attempts, showing that while BC’s defense may have disappointed, they are still highly effective against the pass
- 9 for 348: Punter Mike Knoll was efficient on his 9 kicks, launching them an average of 38.7 yards
- 42, 35, 37: The distance of Colton Lichtenberg’s 3 FGs including a clutch kick at the 2:13 mark that was the difference, it’d be huge if BC could rely on the kicking game this year
- 1-0: Current record of the 2017 Boston College Football Team
