Boston College fell just short Saturday night, losing to 4th ranked Notre Dame 19-16 at Fenway Park in a Notre Dame home game as apart of the Shamrock Series.

With the Eagles coming into the game with a record of 3-7, a primetime matchup on national television with a top five team would be something worth cheering for in what has been a lost season. The Eagles defense played a major role in big spots that helped Boston College stay in the game. Although the Irish piled up 447 yards of total offense, Notre Dame turned the ball over five times with three of the turnovers coming within the BC 5 yard line. Nevertheless, the offense couldn’t put much of an attack together and the Eagles’ late rally wasn’t enough.

Notre Dame carried a 10-0 lead into halftime thanks to a 30 yard field goal by Justin Yoon and a 10 yard touchdown pass to Amir Carlisle from DeShone Kizer. Boston College struggled to provide any sort of offensive attack against the Notre Dame defense. The Eagles came out strong in the second half, as Michael Walker returned the opening kickoff 67 yards to the Notre Dame 27, setting up a 43 yard field goal for Colten Lichtenberg to get BC on the board. Notre Dame, however, added a touchdown with a failed extra point and a field goal to go up 19-3 with just under 11 minutes left in the game.

Coach Steve Addazio made a quarterback change in the second half, replacing the struggling John Fadule with Jeff Smith. On the first play from scrimmage following Justin Yoon’s second field goal to put the Irish up by 16, Smith kept the ball himself and took it 80 yards for a BC touchdown. Even though they failed on the two-point conversion attempt, the Eagles made things interesting, cutting the Notre Dame lead to 19-9. The Eagles would go on to add a late touchdown with 54 seconds left to cut it to three, but they failed to recover the onside kick, coming up just short in 19-16 loss.

Boston College wasn’t able to fully capitalize on the five turnovers by Notre Dame, but they were able to hang tough with a top five team on the national stage. The Eagles wrap up their season this upcoming Saturday, November 28, in the Carrier Dome against rival Syracuse, looking to salvage their last game and end their 7 game losing streak in what has been a disappointing season to say the least.
