Eagles Skate Past Badgers in Season Opener
By Katie Waken
The Eagles are back on the ice at Kelley Rink and came out with a 5-3 win against the Wisconsin Badgers.
The now undefeated Boston College hockey team was lead by seniors David Cotton and Julius Mattila, who lead to 4 of the 5 goals scored by the Eagles this past Friday.
The first period started off with a lot of back and forth action between the Eagles and Badgers. With a little more than 7 minutes into the period, Mattila put BC on the board with an unassisted goal off the wing. Off a power play, Wisconsin tied up the game with a point from Cole Caulfield, but 8 seconds later, Mattilia got his second for the night with the help of Cotton. The Eagles ended the first period 2-1.
The second period started off with the first career goal of freshman defenseman Marshall Warren and was quickly followed by another goal from freshman Matt Boldy. The Eagles have a lot to look forward to coming specifically from Boldy and Warren, but especially Warren being a scoring defensemen, something the Eagles haven’t had in recent seasons. The lead was shortened to 4-3 by the end of the second.
Cotton was able to get the puck past Wisconsin goalie Daniel Lebedeff one last time 35 seconds into the third period, solidifying the score at 5-3. The rest of the third was filled with a lot of back and forth between the Eagles and the Badgers, but ultimately resulted in a win for Boston College.
The contest was highlighted by a lot of fast-paced back and forth play. The Eagles played strong offense getting them out of the neutral zone and into scoring position, putting a lot of pressure on Lebedeff and the Wisconsin defense surrounding him. But Friday nights defense cannot be ignored with the debut of freshman goalie Spencer Knight who saved an outstanding 23 goals.
Next, the Eagles head to Colgate to take on the Raiders at 4:00 PM this Sunday.
