Bob Thompson Steps Down, D’Agostino to Fill In.

By: Theodore Steinke

After eight years with the school’s men’s soccer program, Bob Thompson has stepped down as the head coach of Boston College. Having started as an associate head coach alongside Ed Kelly in August 2018, he became the head coach in January 2020. Thompson played for Boston College from 1999-2002, and after a brief stint in professional play, he coached throughout the Northeast at the collegiate and professional levels. In 2000 and 2002, Thompson won two Big East regular-season titles at BC and one Big East tournament title. He was MVP of the Big East tournament in both years.

During Thompson’s tenure as head coach, Boston College saw mixed results, with no NCAA tournament appearances. The team never made it past the first round of the ACC tournament. Thompson finished his BC career with an overall record of 28–40–20. Coach Thompson’s career, however, was not empty of positives. In 2019, while Coach Thompson was the interim head coach, BC made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament, beating Yale in the first round before being knocked out by Washington. During that season, Coach Thompson’s Eagles went on a six-match unbeaten streak. During the run, they beat No. 3 Wake Forest and drew with No. 1 Virginia. In 2021, Coach Thompson led the team to an unbeaten 5–0–2 record at home, beating conference rivals Syracuse and Wake Forest along the way.

With wins over No. 8 North Carolina in 2024 and No. 14 Virginia Tech in 2025, the Eagles started a streak of defeating nationally ranked opponents each season, which they’re surely looking to carry into 2026. Thompson had his best record as head coach in 2025, with a 7-9-1 record. The Eagles kept six clean sheets across the 17 games, with goalkeeper Andrej Borak being named to the ACC Men’s Soccer All-Freshman Team.

This past spring, the Eagles looked to be on the right track, winning the inaugural Northeast Spring Cup. The Eagles topped the North group, beating Boston University in regular time as well as beating Vermont and the University of New Hampshire on penalties. Topping the group sent the Eagles straight into the cup match, where they defeated Bryant 4-3 on penalties. Andrej Borak made himself big and came up with two saves in the shootout, with Moritz Gundelach winning the cup match MVP. Taking down the UVM Catamounts is a result to be proud of. This is a team that won the NCAA championship in 2024 and made the tournament again in 2025. Thompson ended his career on a high, putting silverware in the Eagles’ cabinet.

Looking ahead, Francesco D’Agostino has assumed the role of interim head coach for the Eagles. Having joined Coach Thompson’s staff in March 2020, only three months after Thompson was made head coach, it is safe to assume that the identity and culture of the Eagles won’t change drastically in the near future. It remains to be seen whether or not Coach D’Agostino is going to be BC’s long-term choice at head coach.
