BC – Hartford Recap

By Ben Neuwirth

The Boston College Eagles beat the Hartford Hawks 73-61 in Connecticut, avenging last year’s loss in Conte Forum.

The Eagles were shaky early as Hartford jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the opening minutes as Hawks sharpshooters were on target and continued to be for much of the opening half. When the 1st half buzzer sounded, the Eagles clung to a miniscule 31-30 advantage.

The later period started off much of the same but Jerome Robinson had memories of last year’s contest and was not going to see it repeated. He imposed his will on this game scoring 23 points along with 6 rebounds and 3 dimes. He became the 42nd player in Boston College history to record 1,000 points. This man deserves endless props for being pretty much the only reason to watch BC basketball the last 3 years.

His backcourt partner Ky Bowman started the game off slowly but came on towards the end, finishing with 21 points, 6 boards and 4 assists himself.

Deontae Hawkins was out with the right knee injury he sustained in the Nebraska game so the Eagles started Steffon Mitchell in his PF slot. Mitchell struggled with his offensive game throughout the night, just 1-7 shooting, but once again was effective on defense and the glass, 9 rebounds. He can’t really get by anyone and doesn’t have great handles but is truly a savant at everything that doesn’t include putting the ball in the basket. BC has to let Steffon be Steffon, don’t ask him to be someone he’s not.

Jordan Chatman was back after missing one game and he was rusty, 1-4 from deep, but finished with a solid 14 points. Vin Baker got major minutes off the bench but was unable to score, in fact none of the Eagles reserves, Luca Kraljevic, Avery Wilson and Johncarlos Reyes were able to record any points, showing how the Hawkins injury stretched a shallow team even thinner.

This wasn’t the blowout many were expecting but BC averted disaster by pulling away in the later minutes. Their next game is Saturday December 9th at 12 PM against #1 Duke. I hope Ky, Jerome and the rest of the crew are ready.
