Football Preview: Virginia Tech (3-5) vs. Boston College (3-5)
Broadcasters: Michael Graziano (PBP), Ryan Poor (Color), Steve McAlee (Color)
In preparation of the game between the Hokies and the Eagles today, AD Brad Bates stopped by to talk to the broadcasters about BC Athletics. Bates talked about BC Athletics as a whole and took questions from the crowd at Gate E, right outside of Alumni Stadium. Bates predicted BC to win, but did not specify by how much the Eagles would be victorious by. Bates discussed his optimism for the football team moving forward, but also stressed that a bowl game was not out of reach for the Eagles. BC needs to come out strong today in order for Brad’s prediction to be correct.
Virginia Tech and Boston College have both struggled with injuries throughout the year. More specifically, QB Michael Brewer and QB Darius Wade have each been out for Virginia Tech and Boston College respectively for most of the year. The Hokies now have Brewer back, BC will not have Wade the rest of the season. Virginia Tech has been a mixed bag this year, and they are coming off of an emotional 4 OT loss to Duke. Virginia Tech has a solid offense and a solid defense. They don’t do anything spectacular, but are capable on each side of the ball.
BC has struggled mightily offensively this year. That should not be a surprise given the fact that they have lost their starting QB, starting RB and have a completely new offensive line from last year. QB Troy Flutie will look to get the start today as Jeff Smith is still dealing with a concussion in last week’s loss at Louisville. Given the offense’s struggles, the defense has done everything to keep Boston College in games this year. With incredible depth at each layer in the defense, the Eagles are still one of the nation’s top defenses.
I predict, as most of BC’s games have been this year, to be low scoring. I see BC’s defense coming up with two turnovers this game and that will be the difference. Flutie will manage the game well, limit his mistakes, and lead the Eagles to a win over the Hokies.
Prediction: Boston College 17 Virginia Tech 13
