Avery Wilson committed to Boston College over the weekend, eschewing interest from Virginia Tech, Clemson, Kansas State and the University of Albany among others. The 6’3” guard out of Forest Park Georgia said that Jim Christian and his staff were impressed with his “college ready body” and well as the impressive 27-7-4 statline he put up his senior year.
While stressing he’s an all around player, Wilson pointed out that driving to the cup and overall scoring are the strongest points of his game. There’s not a ton of tape on WIlson, I could only find three YouTube videos from this year and only one with gameplay
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBa_VvsjpX0), but it’s clear that the southpaw has impressive athleticism. He throws down several dunks with both hands, including this impressive right-handed slam (https://youtu.be/cEuHCZvuVjs?t=1m40s), while also displaying the slithery athleticism BC fans have come accustomed to seeing from star guard Ky Bowman. Like Ky, Avery also played football in highschool and he utilizes his strength several times, finishing through contact on this And One (https://youtu.be/HBa_VvsjpX0?t=44s). His jumper looks very smooth, evoking memories of a young Paul Pierce with legs extended out to the side on his follow through.
Wilson flew under the radar his first 2 years but had a breakout junior season, averaging 19.6 PPG on 56% shooting while getting to the line an astounding 180 times in only 26 games. His Forest Park team only went 7-19 that season but Avery set a goal “to go to the state playoffs” his senior season. Doing a little bit of everything, Wilson lead the Panthers to the playoffs where they lost in the first round to Brunswick.
While he may be unheralded, Avery Wilson has shown a willingness to grind and translated that into remarkable improvement on the floor both personally and for his team. Ky and Jerome Robinson are the only guards who got playing time last year for the Eagles, and an overreliance on ‘Rome was a major factor in BC faltering down the stretch last season. If Wilson can take the backup PG reins, play good defense, distribute and maybe even throw down a couple high-flying slams, he could be a key part of Boston College’s improvement next season.
