Birdball: Beanpot Final Bound.

By: Luke Ballard

The Eagles (23–11–0, 9–6–0 Atlantic Coast Conference) continue to roll this season, taking down their in-state rivals, the UMass Minutemen (6–18–0, 2–13–0 Mid-American Conference) in dominant fashion in round one of the Beanpot this afternoon, winning 11–1.

With this win at home, BC has turned the Eddie Pellagrini Baseball Diamond into a fortress under third-year head coach Todd Interdonato, as they improved to a 10–1 record at home. The lone loss for the Eagles comes from their weekend series against now No. 13 Virginia in a game three loss, where the Eagles fell 1–3.

Bats were hot for the Eagles today as four players recorded two hits in the contest. Leading the way was Luke Gallo, who notched his first career triple in the bottom of the first inning to give BC a 2–1 lead, allowing Jack Toomey and Carter Hendrickson to score, giving Gallo two RBIs on the day. Toomey and Hendrickson also recorded two hits each, as did BC’s slugger Nick Wang.

Wang now has 42 hits on the season, sitting second on the team and only trailing Julio Solier, who has 49. Toomey and Gallo continued their strong plate appearances as they recorded their 36th and 26th hits, respectively.

Birdball defense was on full display today, as sophomore left fielder Colin Larson made an outstretched diving grab to deny UMass’s Reece McCarthy what was to be a sure extra-base hit.

Do not be surprised if Larson’s heroics appear on SportsCenter’s Top 10 segment tomorrow morning, as he continues his strong defensive performance in the outfield.

BC will await the winner of Northeastern and Harvard, who will face off tomorrow for a spot in the Beanpot finals. The Huskies will be looking to three-peat if they can see themselves through to the final, as BC will look for its first since 2023.

Birdball is back tomorrow in the Harrington Athletic Village at 3 pm as they face off against Dartmouth for BC’s Messina College Day. The bigger news will be Birdball’s face-off with ACC opponent Virginia Tech, as the Eagles host the Hokies in a three-game weekend series kicking off Friday at 3 pm.
